How cloud maturity is shaping resilience, security and AI across the NHS and UK healthcare system
Cloud adoption is advancing across the NHS, creating new opportunities to strengthen resilience, improve security and unlock the potential of AI-driven care. Yet progress remains uneven as organisations try to balance modernisation mandates with the realities of legacy infrastructure, regulatory pressure and operational complexity.
This research, conducted by Coleman Parkes Research for Rackspace Technology, examines how NHS and UK healthcare organisations are advancing cloud adoption and where structural challenges continue to shape outcomes. While governance frameworks are forming and investment is increasing, many cloud initiatives remain rooted in IT strategy rather than fully integrated into broader organisational objectives.
Legacy infrastructure remains one of the biggest barriers to digital modernisation and resilience. In fact, 52% of organisations say legacy systems significantly limit their ability to modernise IT environments, affecting cybersecurity readiness, data integration and electronic patient record (EPR) environments.
Across the NHS, organisations are strengthening cloud governance, investing in cyber resilience and exploring pragmatic approaches to AI that deliver measurable operational benefits, including reduced clinician workload and faster access to data insights.
The findings reveal a sector that’s moving forward, but still building the digital foundations required to support secure, interoperable and AI-enabled care at scale.
